Keeping your teeth for life
At Stricklands Dental Fitness Centre, our name reflects our aim - we want to help all our patients to achieve and maintain dental fitness. Having dental fitness means having confidence in your smile, knowing that your teeth look good and that your breath is fresh.
It is particularly important to ensure that your gums are healthy. These form the aesthetic backdrop for your smile, and provide vital support for your teeth. Research has also linked gum disease to other health problems, including heart disease, diabetes and premature birth, making your oral health even more important.
Our hygienists play a key role in helping to keep your gums healthy by professionally cleaning your teeth and advising you on a good oral healthcare routine. Gum disease is caused by plaque, a constantly-forming layer of sticky bacteria. Regular brushing can remove most of the plaque, but not all of it, and gradually it can build- up and harden into tartar (calculus) and cause gum irritation and infection. Our hygienists can remove this stubborn tartar and plaque, and will polish your teeth, leaving them feeling fresh and clean and making it more difficult for further plaque to stick. The required frequency of these scaling appointments is determined by taking 'gum health scores' at each examination appointment, giving the hygienist a prescription to work from.
Regular check-up examinations with our dentists are also important. They enable us to keep a close eye on what is happening in your mouth, so we can spot and treat any problems at an early stage. These examinations also include mouth cancer checks, and could ultimately save your life.
Advanced gum care (periodontics)
Sometimes our patients need more specific care to help them combat the more advanced form of gum disease, periodontitis. This can cause symptoms including sore, swollen and bleeding gums and bad breath, and can eventually lead to tooth loss.
